Annual Creative & Close-up and Macro Competitions

This week, Devizes Photography Club had the pleasure of Simon Caplan LRPS judging our Annual Creative, Close-up and Macro Competitions.

In the first half of the meeting Simon judged 36 creative images, giving us a thorough critique, with lots of positive, helpful remarks, and ideas to improve images. He detailed the need for the right light and wow factor, and how you might go about designing your image.  Simon had a very difficult task on his hands to choose winners from images of such a high standard and when showing them to a colleague and fellow judge the comment was ‘that is the type of club I would like to be a member of’. Jane Wiltshire took first and second place with a beautiful still life called ‘Parrot and Pearls’ and ‘The Blind Man’ respectively, and Robert Harvey taking third with ‘Beacon of Light’.

In the the second half, Simon judged the 32 images of Close up and Macro together. A special mention should go to Dave Johnson who won first place with his cleaver image “Sponge” and second, having been awarded two HCs’ in the first half of the evening.

In summing up the evening’s images, Simon suggested that competitions were about comparing your images with your peers, making improvements, enjoying the hobby you pursue and not always about the trophies.
